Meet and hear hockey legend Paul Henderson & Phantom of the Opera actor Patrick Timney.

Paul Henderson

Paul began his hockey career in Lucknow, Ontario progressing to Junior “A” with the Hamilton Red Wings. After winning the Memorial Cup in 1962 he moved to the N.H.L. Paul played 18 years of professional hockey with the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Atlanta Flames including 5 years in the World Hockey Association. As a professional, he scored 376 goals and added 384 assists.
History will remember Paul for the first Canada-Russia Hockey series in 1972, when Canada needed a victory in each of the last 3 games to win the series. Incredibly, Paul scored the winning goal in each of the 3 games. The goal in the last game was recently declared the greatest sports moment in the last century and Team Canada „72 was voted the Team of the Century. It made him a Canadian hero – a status he retains to this day.

Paul is a member of several Sports Halls of Fame including Canada‟s Sports Hall of Fame. He was born and raised in southwestern Ontario and is married to Eleanor, his high school sweetheart. They have 3 married daughters and seven grandchildren.

Patrick Timney

Patrick is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where he studied voice and opera. Upon graduation, Patrick was invited to join the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble where he created roles in three world premieres in addition to performing in leading roles both on tour and in mainstage productions. Patrick has performed with opera companies and symphonies across North America. Operatic roles include Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly and Marcello in La Boheme.

On the symphonic stage Patrick is noted for performances of Messiah, Elijah and Vaughn Williams’ Five Mystical Songs – to name a few, in addition to a wide range of Broadway repertoire. He also portrayed Monsieur Andre in the Canadian National Tour of Phantom of the Opera for nearly three years.

Patrick and his wife Lisa perform together in concert settings. Some of their favorite repertoire comes from Broadway musicals, a genre that they love because of its abilities to tell compelling stories and to touch people‟s hearts.

And no community is perfect. So how do we respond when a mistake is made? Relationships are often strained and revenge sought. Before long, a community can be full of hurt and deep scars embedded from the past.
Dale Lang suffered a tragic loss when his son was innocently shot and killed by a schoolmate at their school in Taber, Alberta, in April 1999. At the same time that North Americans were focusing on the brave actions of several teens in the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado, Canada was quietly having its own Columbine incident. What Canadians once thought could only happen in America, took place right here in our own backyard – to Jason Lang.

Dale’s courageous act of forgiving his son’s killer has been an inspiration to many Canadian communities. Since Jason’s death, both Dale and his wife Diane have been asked to speak at hundreds of events across the country, including over 350 high schools, numerous conferences, teachers’ conventions, television, radio, churches and many other functions.

A Community of Character is one that has an unselfish view of the needs beyond its own, and works to help the world become a better place.

Meet our guests whose global view has changed their lives!

Dr. Jennifer Wilson is a highly respected doctor in our community. She grew up in the Uxbridge area and was a former President of USS! Dr. Jenn lives in Uxbridge with her husband and five children. She has practiced family and emergency medicine in Uxbridge for the past 10 years after completing her studies at McMaster University. Since 2007 Dr. Wilson has been involved in a unique partnership between local health care professionals and a community development organization in Ghana, West Africa. She has led four medical teams (up to 40 members each), to Ghana to provide medical, surgical, dental and optical care to thousands of patients without access to health care. The Ghana
Health Team has been warmly embraced and supported by the Uxbridge community as well as local businesses and service groups.

Laurel Gillispie felt so strongly about young girls who are being abused that she’s investing a year in Kolkata, India, to work as a journalist for the International Justice Mission. IJM is a human rights organization that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. Laurel will tell the stories of young girls who have been rescued from sex trafficking with the help of IJM.

St. Pauls Youth: The week before Christmas, 12 young people from St. Pauls, Leaskdale, worked in a barrio (poor neighbourhood) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Luggage was filled with sports equipment and craft supplies used to run a week long Day Camp. We will hear from 2 of these youth who returned home with a brand new perspective!
